Grade 9

English 9 PreIB Summer Reading

Read The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck and write an essay on one of the topics below.  Your English teacher will collect this essay during the first week of school, and the essay will count as a test grade for the first marking period.  Please begin this assignment promptly so that you will have ample time to take your essay through several revisions.

Topic Choices:

  • From the novel, choose a character who faces some sort of internal and/or external conflict. Explain the nature and development of this conflict, identifying the traits which the character displays in the working out and/or resolution of this conflict.  Provide specific examples of the changes the character undergoes as a result of this struggle.

  • Choose a key passage from the novel (about a page or so in length) and then analyze this passage in writing.  Describe its context, and then discuss its overall importance or thematic significance.  In other words, if your novel is a jigsaw puzzle, why is this a key piece?  You might comment on the language in the passage (word choice, figurative language, imagery), characterization, theme, setting, etc.  Please photocopy the page and attach it to your essay.

  • Setting in a novel is more than a simple historical context or backdrop for events.  Explain the significance of the novel’s setting.  How does it shape other elements of the novel (like character or point of view or theme)?

Please write 500-750 words.  Do not exceed this word limit.  Please type with double spaced lines or write neatly on fronts only of notebook paper in blue or black ink.

Summer Reading PreDip, Government 10

sherri.smith@nn.k12.va.us or erin.welch@nn.k12.va.us

Students entering the 10th grade pre-diploma Government class are required to complete a summer reading assignment prior to the school year.

The entire rubric for the summer reading can be found online at the Warwick IB website: http://warwick.nn.k12.va.us/ib/ib-summerassignments-ib.html.

The summer reading assignment MUST come from one of the following books:

A Tale of Two Cities  Charles Dickens
The Chamber   John Grisham
Brave New World Aldous Huxley
1984 George Orwell

The rubric is as follows:

Paragraph 1 – Introduce the book and identify the theme.
Paragraph 2 – Identify the type (or types if more than one), of political systems described in the book: democratic, authoritarian, communist, fascist, etc. Define the system and give evidence or examples from the book to support your conclusion. Consult outside sources if you are unsure.
Paragraph 3 – Evaluate the historical setting of the book. What historical or social events shape the political system described in the book? Consult outside sources to determine the accuracy of the author’s description. If the book is set in the future, what actual historical events influenced the author’s description of the future? List your sources.
Paragraph 4 – How is society impacted by the political system in the time period of the book? Do you see any connections to society today? Did the book you read still have historical or political significance for readers today?

Be sure to provide evidence from the book to support your ideas. Just as you would in English, document your examples by stating the page number after each example. (Ex. (6)) Whether you use a direct quote or paraphrase, you must document the source of the idea, especially when consulting outside sources. A works cited or bibliography should be on a separate page at the end of your report.

Make sure that you DO NOT summarize the book. Your teacher has read these books and is looking for evidence that you understand the content and the historical significance of the book. Your teacher is NOT looking for a “book report”.

The paper should be at least two-pages in length – double spaced, using 12 point font and one inch margins. The font should either be Times New Roman or Arial Narrow. No other fonts with be allowed.

Make sure the paper is either stapled together or put into a folder/binder.

All projects are due the first day of class. Each DAY (not class period) your assignment is not turned in, 10 points will be deducted from your final grade.

Pre-Dip German II

Internet Videos and News Articles: This should be an enjoyable exercise giving you the opportunity to watch short videos and read short new articles based on your textbook.  You will watch 4 videos (each is about 4 minutes long) and read three news articles.
Go to: http://www.emcp.com/product_catalog/index.php?GroupID=1343

  • Check the box for German.
  • Put in the Password:  R7P2F7
  • Under I-Videos you can watch the latest video.  Then go to the bottom of the I-Video page and click on “Archives” In total you must watch at least 4 videos from 2009-2010. (1) Write a brief summary in English of each video.  (2)  After each video, click the box on the right that has the check mark.  Write down and answer each of the questions. They are usually multiple choice questions, but they are in German.
  • Under I-News you will read at least three articles.
After entering the password on the left hand side you will see I-News.  These are news articles.  Choose the archives and read at least three articles.  As you read each article, write down any cognates you recognize.  (A cognate is a word that looks similar in both languages and has essentially the same meaning.  Wintersturm, for example, means winter storm.)  You are not expected to understand every word in the article and I want you to avoid looking up lots of words.  Your goal is to write a brief summary in English of what you think the article is about. This summary will demonstrate your ability to make logical conclusions about the article without knowing all of the words.

The assignments will be turned in the 1st day of class.

Pre-Dip German III

See the directions for Pre-Dip German II above.  You will complete 4 news articles all from the 2010-2I011 archives.  Three of them are to be completed as directed above.  One of the news articles is to be translated into good English.

H-German IV, IB German and AP German

Follow the directions as above for Pre-Dip German 3; however, you will translate all four news articles into good English.  In addition, write out and be prepared to respond orally for 20 seconds each to the situations below:

  • Was hast du im Sommer gemacht?
  • Du siehst krank aus.  Was ist denn los?
  • Du bist so spät nach Hause gekommen.  Wie hast du das den Eltern erklärt?
  • Ich fahre heute in der Stadt einkaufen.  Kann ich dir etwas mitbringen
  • Du hast doch einen neuen Job erst letzte Woche angefangen.  Warum willst du denn jetzt schon aufhören?
  • Du hast eine Million Dollar gewonnen.  Was machst du damit?
